Digital Contents and Information Studies

Creating a Paradigm of Consilience
in the Era of Information Technology

The enormous wave of information and data is fundamentally changing our behaviors, lives and social structures. To prepare ourselves for the changes to come, a holistic approach that spans a variety of traditional disciplines is called for. This integrated approach makes it possible to analyze and interpret humans, the making of a society, and its culture at a deeper level, and to train analysts, planners, designers, and managers with information technology affinity.
In the recent years, iSchool (Information School), Data Science School, and Interdisciplinary Studies have been gradually spreading worldwide through the process of ‘information convergence’. Seoul National University established Digital Information Studies major in 2009 to stay ahead of the global trend. The Digital Information Studies major enables definition and understanding of complex phenomena from both academic and practical sides, by taking advantage of existing academic disciplines such as engineering, humanities, natural sciences, design studies, and musicology which have traditionally been regarded as independent disciplines. Creative talents are being cultivated, and they are solving multifaceted problems that can be routinely encountered in industry and society.
